We get a lot of new music sent over, so much that I’m going to have to get my finger out and up my game with Singles Club and try and get a few more editions out every month. This music deserved to be heard! As always, get the earphones in, turn it up, and let me know your thoughts. If you have something you think we should be listening to, don’t hesitate to send it over by dropping a message via our contact page – we’re always looking out for great new music.
Starting hard and fast with “Yoof”, the first single from Yorkshire melodic hardcore band Downturn. These lads are making music like they’ve got something to prove, and for a first single this is a real statement of intent. The raw energy and emotion is dripping from the track, and while it’s short and sweet at under two minutes it gets under your skin. The feral vocals and visceral music leaves its mark. Something very early Gallows about it all. If hardcore is your thing, I can guarantee you’ll love this one. I’m keen to see what comes next from Downturn, I need more of this.
Yoof will be released March 7th

Taken from their upcoming third album ‘Amnesia’, “Idiomorph” is the latest single from Monosphere. A masterclass in post-metal’s emotional power, the song builds from a gentle start escalating to a frantic, high-intensity peak, with both the music and vocals getting increasingly heavier as the song reaches its climax. They’ve clearly learned a thing or two from touring alongside The Ocean as this is the type of song The Ocean make so well, but “Idiomorph” is its own thing and all Monosphere. It’s the type of song that necessitates a deep-dive into their back catalogue, and builds a nice anticipation for the upcoming album.
Idiomorph was released February 12th

Give yourself a nice break from the metal end of the spectrum with “More Than Friends”, an absolute fuzzed-up, spaced-out love song from The Astronauts. The shimmering, woozy guitars capture the sound of a sun drenched day, and the lyrics take you on the journey of young love and realising a relationship is a bit deeper than you thought. The music is really good, it gives you that sunny, happy, hypnotic vibe that mirrors the new-love lyrics. It sounds like something that should be playing over a montage of people having a great time in an episode of The O.C. With summer coming up (for maybe a day or so in Glasgow) this song will go down a treat in on those playlists in the sun. It doesn’t always have to be the heaviest of metal.
More Than Friends will be released March 6th

In Shallows new one “Side Effects” is exactly what you want from a metalcore song – the music is heavy, there’s dual vocals that bring together two different singing styles, and there’s breakdowns a plenty. What else do you need? The song is all about what you give up in order to “get better”, and the vocal tug-of-war between the heavy aggression on one side and the emotion on the other really helps to bring the song to life – vocalists Colin Trombley and Matt Pro play off each other so well. It’s not just the vocals that make their mark in the song, the breakdowns are heavy and the chugging guitars and low end add a real weight to an already heavy song.
Side Effects is out March 6th
