Moshville Times Singles Club – Review Roundup featuring Doppelgänger / Luna Rosa / Dimwind / Mallavora

Here we go again, four more singles for your listening pleasure. Give them a listen, given the bands some love and supports, and tell your friends as well.

Keeping it very local this time to kick us off with Glasgow’s own Doppelgänger and their new single “Rattus”. Described by the band as “a song about rats causing paranoia and insomnia induced schizophrenia” – what else could you possibly want from a song? Personally, absolutely nothing because I have become very much obsessed with this one. I listen to a fair few songs every week and this one I can’t shake. Describing themselves as “blackened-crossover”they have managed to cross over a few genres in this one – there is of course black metal, but with some fierce injections of death and thrash thrown in the mix. It’s heavy, it’s catchy, it’s brilliant. Please, for your own good check it out.

“Rattus” is out March 31st

Moving to the exact opposite side of the musical spectrum we’ve got “The Luge” from Luna Rosa, their first new music in more than two years, and they’re clearly not looking to ease themselves gently back into things. This song is bursting with self-assured swagger in the vocal delivery and a relentless energy from the very first second the guitar kicks in. Luna Rosa don’t just want you to know they’ve returned – they need you to know. There’s a lot of mid-to-late 2000s New York scene about this one, think The Strokes, The Rapture, or the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Its high intensity, in-your-face, built for a sweaty basement gig. The song borrows from the Latin phrase ‘si vis pacem, para bellum’, ‘if you want peace, prepare for war’ which is exactly what Luna Rosa are doing, they’re back, ready for war and it’s just the beginning.

“The Luge” is out March 20th

Next up is “My Uninvited Host” from Dimwind, a heavy single in every sense of the word taken from their upcoming album The Carrion Waltz. The album is their first as a vocal-driven trio, and they’re really diving into that at the deep end. The album was written in the aftermath of a cancer battle and this is reflected in “My Uninvited Host”. From the title, to the lyrics, to the music, everything about this one is like a tonne weight bearing down on you. The relentless nature of post-metal riffs, combined with sludgy doom parts, and the unique half-growled, half-sung vocals from newcomer Misha Sedini which bear all the pain in the songs lyrics. You really feel this song from start to finish.

Moving from one emotional heavy hitter to another, last up is “Hopeless” by Mallavora the latest single to be taken from their upcoming debut album What If Better Never Comes? While it might seem like an apt title given the name of the album, the song is actually quite uplifting. It’s about finding hope by letting go of things you can’t control and accepting that sometimes that is the best way forward. It’s grand and cinematic in its scale – the music continually building, centred around the vocals and their delivery, which are the real centrepiece of this song. Mallavora have managed to convey the feeling of a weight being lifted, or the air finally being clear, through music on this one. Based on this, the album will be one to look out for.

“Hopeless” was released February 25th
