From the very first second, “Twisted” gave me a stunned facial impression. Firstly, because Mason Hill are back, and secondly—that opening riff? Ooft! Instantly gripping. It’s punchy, confident, and I’m pretty sure it sets the tone for what feels like a darker, heavier chapter for the band. I am absolutely ready for it.
What really hooked me in this track is that little rhythmic switch when new lead vocalist Tom Ward sings “slowly feel you”. There’s a subtle change in the flow that builds tension beautifully before you’re thrown headfirst into a massive, alt-pop like chorus. “I know it’s twisted, but I can’t resist it” is one of those lyrics that sticks in your head after just one listen. It perfectly captures that messy, complicated, can’t-stay-away kind of love that you know is bad for you, but feels so good anyway.
Vocally, Tom Ward is seriously impressive. He doesn’t just sing the melody – he plays with it. There’s grit woven into the smoother moments, giving the whole track an emotional edge. You can feel the push and pull in his delivery, which makes the theme of toxic temptation hit even harder. Instrumentally, the whole band is on fire with this new sound. The guitars from James Bird and Marc Montgomery feel thick and commanding, the bass from Matt Ward adds that driving weight underneath, and Craig McFetridge’s drumming has a thunder-like quality that keeps everything moving with purpose. It’s heavy, but the melodies are still front and centre, which I absolutely love.
If you’re into the emotional punch of Boston Manor, the grit and heart of Those Damn Crows, or the style of Florence Black, this will be 100% up your street. “Twisted” feels like a band stepping forward with confidence. It’s heavier and a little darker, but still packed with massive hooks. If this is a taste of what’s coming next, then you for sure don’t want to miss out on this new chapter for the band.
