It’s been hell of a 12 months for the Ipswich thrashers Elimination. Their album Echoes of the Abyss deservedly made many thrash commentators top ten lists of 2021, the band toured and got a last-minute slot at last year’s Bloodstock Open Air. It was as if the thrash god had finally looked down and brought a little luck. Now, with a new look line-up as a four-piece, Elimination is set to roar again in 2022 with their new single “Icon of Despair. “
In exactly the same move as Blackpool’s Blacklist, this is a single that will already be familiar to those that purchases the excellent charity compilation Moshin the Roof On Vol 3, released earlier this year. Read our review here.
Now “Icon of Despair” comes snarling to all, not just those who are dedicated to the UK thrash movement and it’s a vital and energetic beast that goes at full throttle from start to finish. A very 80s Metallica style intro hangs like mist before an explosive roar erupts and we are away. I’ve always liked the way that the vocals are delivered with power but also with clarity and Neil Stevens does another sterling job here whilst the razor-sharp guitar work of David Hill is once more on point.
The track may be over five-minutes in length, but it rips along so fast that it feels like three. There’s only one thing to do, and that’s hit the play button again to enjoy a massive track which brings Elimination to our attention once more. It’s a song that carries everything the thrash fan is looking for. Find it, stream it, and feel pleased that the UK is still able to produce solid thrash metal.
