Two debut singles in one day – we are truly spoiled! As far removed from Hostilia’s Swedish thrash as you can get, welcome the alt rock stylings of Sydney, Australia’s Cosmo Blue. With an edge of funk and pretty upbeat rhythms, this two-piece have created something ear-opening.
While it’s not the kind of music I’d usually listen to, there’s no denying that the catchy rhythm is a good tonic at the end of a long workday when the nights are still coming in very quickly (for those reading in Oz, our winter is very different to yours). I confess I wasn’t too sure of the vocals on first listen, they’re recorded with a bit of reverb and chorus so it sounds like multiple overlaid singers (or maybe it is both of the band members!). However, it’s a unique little quirk and does add something to the overall sound. It definitely fits the rapid-fire tone of the song itself.

They actually have a bit of a classic pop influence as well. As well as a guitar solo, there’s a keyboard/synth flurry which really brings on the 80s feels. Nice touch.
If there’s a band I could name that would be good to partner Cosmic Blue with, it’s Royal Republic. Different enough that they’d complement each other well with Cosmic Blue definitely capable of warming a crowd up for the Swedes based on this four minute sample.
