EP Review: Eville – Br4t Metal

Since their formation, Eville have been on a rapid rise. BBC Radio 1’s Alyx Holcombe has rightly championed them as one of her “Ones To Watch” for 2025, and having seen them in the flesh at this year’s Magnata Festival, I’ve been eagerly awaiting their music in a physical format. The result is their debut EP, Br4t Metal.

Consisting of four tracks, this EP is a bold statement that embodies the band’s flair for empowerment, washed down with hooks and heaviness. Opener “Br4t Mbl” kicks off with waves of Y2K soundscapes that get oldies like me wanting to relive my 20s. Alongside the absolute earworm of a chorus is a nice slab of heaviness, which flows into the drum and bass-laden “No Pictures Please”. This track cleverly turns the narrative of hounding paparazzi into a message of resilience, wrapped in a pop-style chorus with some great breakdowns.

“Bikini Top” is a track that will stay with you for days, with its infectious lyric, “I’m so hot in my Bikini Top, don’t tell me what to wear because I’m never gonna stop”. Behind the catchy nu-metal groove, however, lies a serious message tackling unsolicited comments and judgment. It’s a bitter taste and a downside of the scene, but hopefully, with a young group like Eville standing up to how unacceptable this is, others will take note. It’s a shame we can’t use this as a PSA at every concert and festival, but I digress.

The EP closes with “Accidents Happen”, a track penned in the aftermath of shared pain and betrayal. It further demonstrates just how this Brighton trio are carving out their place in heavy music with a clash of chaos, confidence, and catharsis.
