With the evolution of technology, solo projects in metal are something that is becoming ever more common. Even if solo projects appear more frequently in black metal-adjacent subgenres, other subgenres such as doom metal are not complete strangers to this concept. Coming from the fertile mind of Danilo de Oliveira, Ormsdóttir is an up and coming doom metal solo project from Brazil. Its first EP, Children of Sin was released earlier this year.

Featuring 3 songs – “Children of Sin”, “Kill the Monster” and “The Boring Human Life”- and clocking in at almost 15 minutes, Ormsdóttir presents us some simple but effective doomy, slow, hypnotizing metal. Slow vocals, simple riffs and minimalist but effective percussion reign in this quarter-hour endeavor. Starting off with some cleaner guitars, the title track already thrusts the listener into the world of Oliveira’s creation.
While there are some things that could be picked out as flaws, such as the riffs getting a tad repetitive and the production not being the most consistent, all can be excused, as Children of Sin is only the first release in a solo project, so Danilo still has a long road to trek and will surely evolve in his coming releases. There are also many things done right in the EP. For example, the tracks contrast each other quite well, with “Kill the Monster” being more energetic and having some flashes of stoner, while “The Boring Human Life” is more traditionally doomish, being slower and dealing with more depressive theme.
All in all, Ormsdóttir’s first foray into doom metal definitely has some aspects which could show inexperience, but also has many quality moments mixed in there. It is of utmost importance to reiterate that this is Danilo de Oliveira’s first release, and as a solo project, something which is objectively tough. It would not be a huge surprise if in a few years, Ormsdóttir is regarded as one of the Brazilian underground’s hidden gems.
