Mexico City’s own Red Sands have just dropped a brand new video for their track “System”, and it’s a bit of a departure from their usual melodic fare. The song is the centrepiece of their latest EP, Evocations, which is out in the wild right now.
While the band usually leans into the symphonic and atmospheric side of things, “System” sees them strapping on the spiked wristbands and embracing a fiercer thrash metal edge. It’s a bit of a beast, clocking in at five minutes and packed with double-kick drumming, intricate guitar work, and some moody synth layers for good measure. The band reckons it’s their most complex track to date, requiring a few listens to really get your head around all the musical twists and turns.
Lyrically, the guys aren’t pulling any punches either. “System” is a proper protest song, taking a pop at political corruption, religious hypocrisy, and the way big corporations are wrecking the planet. They’ve compared the modern world to a bit of a dystopia, with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse basically being replaced by dodgy politicians and greedy CEOs. It’s heavy stuff, both musically and mentally.
The Evocations EP features six tracks in total, including “The Hunt” which features a guest spot from Stu Block. The whole release is a meditation on life, death, and everything in between, wrapped up in a sound that’ll appeal to fans of Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, and Opeth. The striking artwork was even handled by the band’s vocalist, Jonathan Corral, proving they’re a talented bunch of lads.
The quintet have been a fixture of the Mexican scene since 2012, and after a brief break a couple of years back, they returned with a revamped line-up and a much bigger, more theatrical sound. If you haven’t checked them out yet, this new video is a cracking place to start.
