It’s been eight long years since we last had a full-length offering from the Norwegian symphonic black metal titans Dimmu Borgir, but the wait is finally over. The band have officially announced their new opus, Grand Serpent Rising, which is set to arrive on 22nd May via Nuclear Blast Records.
The new record features thirteen tracks that the band says reflect every era of their legendary career. Recorded in Gothenburg with the renowned Fredrik Nordström – the man behind the desk for classics like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia – it promises to be a massive blend of orchestral grandeur and pure black metal frost. Guitarist Silenoz explains that the title represents renewal and growth, noting that the completion of the album coincided with the end of the Year of the Snake in early 2026.
To get us in the mood, they’ve dropped a cinematic new video for the track “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel”. Sung in their native Norwegian, it’s a punishingly epic piece of work that dives into themes of heritage and bloodlines. You can check out the video below to see exactly why these guys are still at the top of the food chain.
As if a new album wasn’t enough, Dimmu Borgir are also heading out on a monumental co-headline run in October 2026. They’ll be joined by Behemoth for the “In League With Satan” tour, with Dark Funeral rounding out a line-up that is frankly terrifying. No UK dates as yet, but we’ll keep you informed if any materialise.
The album is available in a staggering array of formats, including several coloured vinyl variants for the collectors out there. Tickets for the tour go on sale via the band’s official site.
