Hailing from the sunny climes of Brisbane, Australia, Darklore are doing their level best to bring some serious blackened fantasy metal to the global stage. The band have just unleashed a new lyric video for “The Great Elven War”, the towering title track from their latest album. If you like your metal served with a side of face paint, leather, and high-stakes storytelling, this one’s for you.
The track serves as the narrative heart of the record, chronicling a brutal conflict between High Elves and the shadow-dwelling Dark Elves. It’s not just your standard fantasy fare, though. The story follows the Dark Elven Queen, who, after being captured by the noble High Elves, reveals her true vampiric nature under the moonlight and proceeds to tear the High Elven King’s head from his shoulders. It’s a proper bit of carnage that’s as cinematic as it is heavy.
Darklore have built a reputation for theatrical live shows that feel more like a scene from Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Rings than a standard gig. By blending melodic blackened aggression with symphonic overtones, the “Lord Commander”, “War Master”, and “High Priestess” have created a sound that’s both aggressive and atmospheric. While they might be based on the other side of the world, their brand of mythic metal is finding fans far beyond the Australian underground.
The album The Great Elven War follows their 2021 debut, The Evil of Man, and marks a significant step up in ambition. With a chilling promise at the end of the title track—”We will return”—it sounds like the saga is only just getting started. We’ve been keeping an eye on the burgeoning Australian metal scene lately, covering everything from Sydney prog to Brisbane’s own technical masters, and Darklore are certainly adding a unique, theatrical flavour to that mix.
You can watch the new lyric video now and immerse yourself in the battle for Avaryndel. Just don’t expect a happy ending for the High Elves.
