Annihilus Mundi returns with “Absolute Terror”, first new music in seven years

It’s been a fair old while since we last heard from Annihilus Mundi, but the progressive extreme metal project is officially back in the game. After nearly seven years of tinkering away in the shadows, mastermind Daniel Saillant has finally unleashed a brand-new single and music video titled “Absolute Terror”.

If you’re a fan of music that keeps you on your toes, this one is right up your street. The track is a proper melting pot of sounds, blending chaotic death metal riffs with the kind of expansive, melodic atmosphere you’d expect from the likes of Cynic or later-era Death. There’s even a bit of “blackgaze” influence in there, nodding to bands like Deafheaven, which makes for a pretty immersive listen. It’s heavy, sure, but it’s got plenty of heart behind the aggression.

The track features a visceral vocal performance from Noah Magnelli, and for those who love a bit of guitar heroics, there’s a cracking guest solo from Chris Jones of Æther Realm. It’s great to see that the art of the shred is still alive and well in 2026.

Lyrically, things get a bit deep. Saillant has drawn inspiration from the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime – specifically the “Absolute Terror Field” (AT Field) concept. For those not up on their giant robot lore, it’s a barrier used for protection, but here it serves as a metaphor for the emotional walls we all build out of fear. It’s a bit more intellectual than your standard “hail Satan” fare, exploring the psychological struggles of characters like Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley-Soryu.

This single marks a fresh start for Annihilus Mundi, with Saillant handling the guitars, bass, keys, and programming himself. It’s been a long wait since the 2019 debut Grief, but it sounds like the project has evolved into something even more ambitious. We’re keeping our ears to the ground to see what else he’s got planned for this year.
