If you’ve been keeping an eye on the German metal scene over the last decade, the name Andrey Smirnov will be plenty familiar. The guitarist and composer, known for his stellar work with U.D.O. and Dirkschneider, has just announced his brand-new venture: a heavy metal outfit called Axe & Ashes.
The band haven’t wasted any time getting out of the gate, dropping their debut single “Trial by Fire” today, 6th March. It’s a proper high-energy anthem that leans heavily into that classic 80s spirit we all love, but with a punchy, modern production job that keeps it sounding fresh. Think big riffs, an even bigger chorus, and the kind of traditional metal gallop that gets the pulse racing.
Smirnov has been a staple of the scene for years, and we’ve covered his previous exploits plenty of times. Most recently, we caught his former bandmates on the road during the massive Hell, Fire and Steel tour – you can check out our review of the Manchester show here to see the kind of pedigree he’s bringing to this new project.
Accompanying the single is a new music video over on YouTube. The band is looking to build a bit of a community from the ground up, so they are asking fans to head over to their new social pages and get involved. If “Trial by Fire” is anything to go by, Smirnov is far from done with the world of traditional heavy metal, and we’re keen to see where he takes this one next.
