Poison Ruïn announce new album ‘Hymns from the Hills’

Philadelphia’s finest purveyors of “dungeon punk,” Poison Ruïn, have just announced their latest full-length record, Hymns from the Hills. Set to drop on 3rd April via Relapse Records, this one looks to be their most ambitious work yet, expanding their bleak, mythic sound into even grittier territory. To get us started, the band has shared a new single and video for the track “Eidolon.”

Frontman Mac Kennedy says “Eidolon” is all about being “stuck in a broken reality,” acting as a cog in a machine that’s destined to repeat the same cursed loop until the whole thing falls apart. It’s exactly the kind of uplifting stuff we’ve come to expect from the Philly quartet. While they’re still leaning heavily into that medieval, scythe-swinging aesthetic, the music itself is evolving. You can expect the usual raw, cassette-dubbed aggression, but this time it’s layered with analog synths and even some ambient touches inspired by the likes of Scott Walker.

The band – Mac Kennedy, Nao Demand, Allen Chapman, and Will McAndrew – recorded the album themselves in a private practice space to get the sound just right. They also drafted in Jonah Falco (F*cked Up) for mixing and Arthur Rizk (Power Trip) for mastering to make sure those “rusted chain” textures really pop. Kennedy is quick to point out that while the imagery is medieval, he’s not trying to give us a history lesson; he’s using those old symbols to make sense of the modern-day mess we’re all living through.
