Sheffield’s finest, Malevolence, have just dropped a brand-new track called “Twelve To Zero”, and it’s a bit of a special one. This isn’t just another single; it’s a massive collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment to celebrate the 12th expansion of World of Warcraft, titled Midnight. In a move that’ll make any musician sweat, the band wrote and recorded the entire thing in just twelve hours.
The whole idea kicked off back at Download Festival. Blizzard and Jackson Guitars surprised guitarist Konan Hall with a custom axe inspired by his own in-game character, a Dwarf Paladin. Since Kon is a proper World of Warcraft nut, the partnership grew from there. Blizzard basically threw down the gauntlet: could the band capture the dark, high-stakes vibe of the new expansion—where the Void is threatening to ruin everyone’s day – and do it against a ticking clock?
Naturally, the lads didn’t blink. They headed into the studio and channeled all that looming horror into a crushing, cinematic banger. If you want to see how the sausage is made, they’ve released a “making-of” video showing Alex, Wilkie, Kon, Josh, and Charlie racing to get the riffs and vocals sorted before the deadline. It’s a far cry from the Valentine’s “ballad” “Silhouette” they teased us with earlier this month; this is Malevolence back at their punishing best.
We’ve been following the guys for ages, and they’ve certainly come a long way since we saw them opening up pits at the Glasgow Cathouse back in 2014. This new project comes on the heels of their latest album, Where Only The Truth Is Spoken, which was recorded at Dave Grohl’s legendary Studio 606. Whether they’re breaking records for crowdsurfers at Bloodstock or writing tracks for one of the biggest games on the planet, they aren’t slowing down.
