The Moshville Times - The Empty Page unleash gritty new single / video “Death On Our Side”

Manchester trio The Empty Page have just dropped their latest single, “Death On Our Side”, and it’s a bit of a belter. Released on Wednesday (21st January) via Kycker, the track follows on from November’s “When We Gonna Run?” and keeps the momentum going nicely.

If you know the band, you know they aren’t in the business of writing sappy love songs. Instead, they tackle the grim realities of modern life with a proper Mancunian edge. “Death On Our Side” is no exception, serving up a fragile yet punchy commentary on life in modern Britain. It’s a track about the realisation that for many, the only pension plan available is checking out early. As the lyrics go: “Small lives are plundered / and underfunded / But we got death on our side.”

Musically, it seamlessly melds punk attitude with shoegaze textures—think fuzzy riffs and shimmering guitar lines over a driving beat. The track is the second in a series recorded at Nave Studios in Leeds with producer Matt Peel (Eagulls, Dream Wife). Vocalist Kel seems chuffed with the setup, noting:

“We’ve long been fans of Matt’s work, so it was great to work together finally. The studio is so cool, and Matt’s references from Radiohead to Smashing Pumpkins align perfectly with the songs we’ve been writing.”

The single was mastered by Cicely Balston at Abbey Road, so it sounds crisp as you like. The artwork is worth a look too—continuing a theme of featuring older fans of the band back in their teenage years, capturing that DIY punk spirit of a pre-internet world.
