If you were hoping for a cheery, upbeat start to the New Year, you might want to look away now. Baltimore’s Orchid Throne have just dropped a video for their new single, “Ephemerality”, and it’s a proper slab of melodic doom to shake off the festive hangover.
The track is the third glimpse into the project’s upcoming debut album, Buried in Black, which is set to land next week on January 9th. While Orchid Throne is a solo endeavour, the man behind the curtain is no stranger to the scene. Nicholas Bonsanto has spent the last 17 years playing in bands like Lör, Empress, and Helianthus. Usually found in a supporting role, Bonsanto has taken the reins here, handling everything from writing and performing to the mixing and mastering.
Musically, this is one for fans of Swallow the Sun, Woods of Ypres, or Anathema. It’s heavy, atmospheric, and deals with some fairly weighty topics anxiety, depression, and the fear of death are all on the menu. Bonsanto describes the album as a collection of feelings he’s kept buried for years, finally brought to the surface.
Speaking about the release, he said: “This album is a long time coming for me. For more than a decade, I collected little recordings of ideas in the hope that one day they’d be useful. I could not be more proud of myself for how the album came out.”
You can check out the video for “Ephemerality” below. If you like what you hear, the album is available to pre-order now.
