Philly shoegaze outfit Nothing have kicked off 2026 with a bit of a racket, dropping their latest single “toothless coal” and confirming a run of dates on this side of the pond for April. The new track is the final teaser before their fifth studio album, a short history of decay, lands on 27th February via Run For Cover Records.
If you’ve been following the breadcrumbs, “toothless coal” feels like the heavier, uglier sibling to the previously released “cannibal world” and the stripped-back “purple strings”. It’s got that grinding, industrial edge that leans closer to the wall-of-noise era of My Bloody Valentine than the baggy, Madchester vibes they’ve been flirting with recently. It’s a proper ear-bleeder in the best possible way, dispensing with the vocal filters for something a bit more raw and direct.
The upcoming album, a short history of decay, sees frontman Domenic “Nicky” Palermo reckoning with some heavy themes – aging, illness, and the general wear and tear of existing. It’s also the first outing for the band’s solidified new lineup, which now features Doyle Martin (Cloakroom), Zachary Jones, Cam Smith, and – in a move that will please plenty of indie fans—Bobb Bruno of Best Coast on bass.
