If you’ve been missing that proper, old-school death metal stomp – the kind that feels like you’re wading through treacle made of entrails – then you’re in for a treat. Chicago death metal outfit Necronomicon Ex Mortis have returned, and they aren’t messing about. The band has just dropped their latest single, “Left To Die”, and it is a cracking slice of mid-tempo brutality that serves as a perfect appetiser for their upcoming EP, Zombie Blood Nightmare.
Set to land on 20th February 2026, the new EP sees the band fully embracing their love for 90s death metal. If you’re a fan of Obituary’s pit-crushing grooves, this track will be right up your street. It’s built on thick, chugging riffs and that undeniable momentum that just makes you want to bang your head. To top it all off, the track features a ripping guitar solo from former Megadeth shredder Jeff Young, adding a touch of virtuosity to the carnage.
Lyrically, the band are keeping it simple and nasty. There are no deep metaphors or hidden meanings here – just the grim tale of being abandoned in a gore pit, surrounded by blood and guts, facing the inevitable. It’s unpretentious, glorious violence, exactly as the genre intended. It’s refreshing to hear a band just commit to the horror and absurdity of it all without trying to be too clever.
Zombie Blood Nightmare promises six tracks of this relentless, horror-infused assault. It sounds like the band have really honed their sound, blending that raw spirit of early death metal with their own brand of undead absurdity. If “Left To Die” is anything to go by, the full release is going to be a belter.
