It’s been a fair old while since we heard fresh noises from the Metal Allegiance camp. In fact, you have to go back to 2018 for their last slab of original material. But the wait is finally over, as the all-star collective has dropped a brand-new single, “Black Horizon”.
For those needing a refresher, the core of the band features Alex Skolnick (Testament), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and Mark Menghi. For this latest offering, they’ve drafted in Alice In Chains frontman William DuVall to handle the vocals, and it’s a massive addition to the sound. The track marks the first release for the band under their new home at Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM).
The track itself is a brooding beast. Skolnick kicks things off with some roaring riffs, while Portnoy and Menghi keep the rhythm section tight and heavy. DuVall’s vocals add a layer of ominous dread that fits the “apocalyptic” vibe perfectly. It’s dark, it’s heavy, and it sounds like the world is ending—in a good way, obviously.
Mark Menghi, who also produced the track, seems pretty chuffed with the result:
“Who would have thought we’d be here 12 years later with new MA music? Very excited to have one of my favorite vocalists from one of my favorite bands on the first new MA music in 8+ years, which opens up a new era for MA. As the saying goes, you can’t kill what doesn’t die.”
It turns out this song has been in the works for quite some time. Alex Skolnick describes it as a “gift from the ghost of MA past,” noting that it was built from riffs they started years ago but never quite polished off until now. With the addition of DuVall, they’ve finally managed to get it across the finish line.
Mike Portnoy is equally stoked to see the track finally released:
“After having finished these drum tracks, I’m stoked that they finally get to see the light of day! Thanks to William for finishing it up for us and welcome to the MA family!”
