Liechtenstein’s own gothic-doom outfit Black Reuss has turned the spotlight back onto their 2023 album Arrival, presenting the single “Loner” with an accompanying music video. If you aren’t familiar with the project, it serves as a musical autobiography of sorts, with the moniker itself drawn from the river Reuss in Switzerland – a fitting metaphor for a life that is always in motion.
The project is built around a four-chapter concept: Metamorphosis, Journey, Arrival, and the inevitable final chapter, Death. With Arrival having landed back in December 2023, “Loner” sits firmly in the third distinct phase of this narrative. Stylistically, you know what you are getting here: doomy, gothic heavy metal with a melancholic edge and a healthy dose of heaviness.
The track itself explores the idea of life as a river carrying experiences and knowledge downstream until it eventually reaches the sea. It’s heavy, introspective stuff, but that’s exactly what fans have come to expect from the project. If you missed the album when it first came out, or just want to dive back into the gloom, you can check out the video for “Loner” below.
