Black Eyed Sons have released the official video for their deeply personal new track, “Autumn Reigns”. The song features a guest appearance from Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke.
The track holds significant personal meaning for the band, as it was written by Guy Griffin following the tragic loss of his brother, Daniel, in late 2021.
Griffin explains the song’s perspective: “Written as if by the person who’s gone for the people left behind, its lyrics deal with loss, grief and the passage of time, trying to make sense of life after tragedy… something we all go through at some point in our lives.” He adds that while the subject is sad, “I hope the song’s uplifting… that’s how I’d like it to be heard.”
He also commented on the guest contributions: “It was an honour to have Charlie Starr of BlackBerry Smoke with us on the song, his vocal performance was amazing.” Griffin also extended his thanks to Chip Z’Nuff for contributing bass to the track.
The video was filmed outside the legendary Hammersmith Odeon, a location steeped in rock history. In a fitting tribute, Griffin plays a very special instrument in the video, loaned to him by Alan Clayton of The Dirty Strangers.
“It’s Keith Richards’ Gibson Hummingbird,” Griffin revealed. “It’s the guitar he wrote and recorded “Wild Horses” on and was gifted to him by Gram Parsons. It’s also all over Exile on Main Street.”
The connection runs deeper, as Griffin explains: “It’s fitting that it’s in the video for this tune as my brother was a good friend of Alan’s and also a huge Stones fan (especially Keef!). Some of my fondest memories are from Stones shows we attended together. This one’s for you Dan.”
The band encourages anyone struggling with grief or mental health challenges to seek support or donate to Mind.
The band is also touring the UK later this year on “The Cowboys in Pinstriped Suits Tour Part 1”.
