Profane Elegy declares defiance with new single “I Am”

Independent black metal force Profane Elegy has returned with “I Am”, a blistering new single described as an anthem of rebellion and self-assertion. The track, which is available to watch online, serves as a direct challenge to both divine authority and human limitation. It is the latest release from the band’s upcoming full-length album, Herezjarcha, which is slated for release in January 2026.

The song draws its thematic inspiration from the Book of Exodus, where Moses demands God’s name and receives the cryptic reply, “I am that I am.” Profane Elegy seizes this moment of divine revelation and inverts it into a powerful declaration of human defiance. The band reframes the concept not as an act of submission, but as one of reclamation. This conviction is channelled through a sonic assault of searing riffs, towering percussion, and an unrelenting vocal performance.

Emerging from the underground in 2023, Profane Elegy began as a two-man studio vision between guitarist J Gulick and vocalist Mikael L. The project, rooted in Bangor, Pennsylvania, soon evolved into a full four-piece with the addition of bassist David G and drummer Sean M in 2023. Though the members are divided across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, they have built their creative bond through remote collaboration.

This new single follows their acclaimed 2023 debut album, When All Is Nothing. The upcoming record, Herezjarcha, promises to be a heavier, more dynamic, and thematically deeper exploration of their sound. Produced by J Gulick and mastered by Kevin Antreassian at Backroom Studios, the album continues the band’s commitment to vision over genre purity, weaving together elements of black, doom, death, and progressive metal with orchestral textures and philosophical lyrics.

Following their debut album’s release, Profane Elegy made their live debut and have been performing across the northeastern United States, including a notable support slot for Dark Funeral in late 2024. The new album’s title, Herezjarcha, is the Polish translation of ‘heresiarch’ (or arch-heretic), perfectly encapsulating the band’s rebellious and introspective spirit.
