Progressive death alchemists Azure Emote have released a new music video for their track ‘Return to the Unknown’. Mastermind Mike Hrubovcak commented on the track, stating: “Those who are interested in the lyrics will already have figured out that ‘Return to the Unknown’ is simply about dying. It deals with the process when death comes knocking, when we succumb to the experience, which is followed by acceptance, and finally letting go.”

Cryptic Aura offers a sonic journey through the outer realms of death metal, pushing musical possibilities to their limits. After years of turbulent periods, Azure Emote returns with a lineup of seasoned death metal veterans, united by a shared passion for extreme music. Each track on Cryptic Aura is distinct in its abstract intensity, yet they are cohesively bound by an unsettling amalgamation of disturbing atmospheres, restless unease, and defiant creativity.

The band was founded in Philadelphia, PA, in 2003 by vocalist and keyboard player Mike Hrubovcak, with the support of guitarist Ryan Moll (Total Fucking Destruction). Hrubovcak’s vision was to create an experimental musical outlet for personal expression, free from conventional genre limitations often found in extreme metal. Often described as avant-garde or progressive death metal, Azure Emote’s unique sound integrates a diverse range of instruments and musical styles, incorporating elements of experimental, industrial, electronic, doom, progressive, and blackened death metal.

Their debut album, Chronicles of an Aging Mammal (2007), quickly garnered a cult following. However, Azure Emote went on hiatus as Hrubovcak focused on touring with his other bands, Monstrosity and Vile. The band was resurrected in the summer of 2011 with the addition of Fear Factory and Malignancy drummer Mike Heller, leading to the release of their sophomore album, The Gravity of Impermanence, in 2013. This album showcased even more ambitious songwriting and enhanced production. Their third full-length, The Third Perspective (2020), was crafted over seven years between touring commitments, serving as a comprehensive summary of their extensive experience and refined songwriting.

The current lineup includes Kelly Conlon, who played bass on Death’s Symbolic and has been a member of Monstrosity. With the involvement of former Eluveitie lead-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Anna Murphy (now of Cellar Darling) and violinist Pete Johansen (ex-Sirenia), Azure Emote has expanded its impressive musical range even further.

Cryptic Aura is a testament to the potential of death metal when genre constraints and musical preconceptions are cast aside, all while maintaining its brutal core.
