Charleston, West Virginia metal veterans Byzantine have unveiled the video for “Harbinger,” taken from their latest full-length Harbingers, released last June via Metal Blade Records.
The stop-motion clip was written by vocalist Chris Ojeda alongside his daughter Mallory, and brought to life by Mexican claymation artist Adrian Venti. Edited by Holly Grayson of Screaming Butterfly Entertainment, the video tells the story of a boy who, after losing his father, is lured down a path of greed by a voracious wolf—only to be saved by a single act of kindness towards a raven.
Ojeda comments:
“This video has taken months to curate. Mallory and I are fans of all things stop motion—movies like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Coraline, James and the Giant Peach—and music videos from Peter Gabriel, Björk, Tool, and Primus. We modelled the main character after my six-year-old son, Henry. I hope you enjoy this labour of love and appreciate the work and symbolism that’s gone into the script, the claymation, and the editing. Our team wanted to push the creative aspect as far as we could and tell this story of a boy who just wants to be important.”
