Royals drop summer anthem “Good For Me” ft. WSTR

Royals are at it again. After their return last month, the band have followed up with “Good For Me”, a fast-paced, relentless pop-punk banger written about that one person who feels way out of your league. Featuring Sammy Clifford of WSTR, the track rips through the intro and first verse, catapulting listeners into an infectious chorus within 30 seconds.

As “Good For Me” bursts out of the gate full of adrenaline, Royals immediately grab their listeners and refuse to let them go for its entire duration. From the opening hook to the first line about iced coffee, the guys will have rooms up and down the country singing their hearts out to its relatable, nostalgic and tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

We wanted this one to just hit you straight away,” explains Luke. “From the first second it opens up and keeps going. It’s probably the fastest, most straight up pop punk track we’ve ever released, and we really leaned into that.

“Good For Me” sees Royals hone in on their modern pop-punk sound, holding nothing back. Unlike past tracks which have seen the 4-piece tinker with intricate production and dynamic shifts, this one charges straight down the middle of the genre. Adding to the track’s firepower is WSTR’s Sammy Clifford, who delivers a blistering second verse before going back and forth with Luke throughout, giving the song extra punch.

WSTR are one of our favourite bands, we’ve been listening to them for years – I did a cover of Filthy on my YouTube channel. We were lucky enough to have played a couple shows with them and as we recorded this track, we couldn’t stop saying ‘this really sounds like something Sammy would smash,’” says Luke.

Thankfully he was up for it. And he killed it!

Lyrically, “Good For Me” is a heartfelt reflection on love, self-worth and little quirks. Written by bassist and co-lyricist Tom Guildford it takes on an outside perspective by imagining all of the things he would be thinking and feeling about his now-wife, if he hadn’t have got the girl.

This track had a bit of a different approach,” shares Tom. “It all started because I had this line about The Offspring and iced coffee! We’ve written love songs before, but this time I had this idea where rather than being all soppy and talking about a relationship, taking those feelings and putting a ‘what if?’ perspective over the top, where I’m seeing this person and wanting to win her over. What if I was on the outside, seeing her around, knowing about all the things she loves… her music taste, her favourite season, her coffee order… and wanting so badly to be part of her world.

Ultimately it’s about falling for someone for all of the reasons that make them who they are, but also feeling like they’re out of your league. It’s got this really interesting blend of real depth and storytelling, while also being quite a simple and relatable concept. I took it to the guys and they were on board so it was exciting to bring it to life!

Eagle-eyed fans of classic emo and pop punk will spot nostalgic nods throughout – from references to songs such as “Want You Bad” by The Offspring, and “I’d Do Anything” by Simple Plan, to wearing all black and still partying to the same songs you listened to back in 2004. There are four song references in total – see if you can guess them all!

“’Good For Me’ also gave us big Ticket Outta Loserville vibes,” says Luke. “The structure of the song is pretty similar throughout, which is not something we typically do. So instead, the lyrics evolve each time to tell the story – from wanting to be with her, to actually being with her, and still wondering how you got there. Meanwhile the references to the band merch she’s wearing are then played on in the following lyrics as it progresses. It’s a lot of fun!”
