The Sanctum festival completes 2026 line-up with modern metal heavy hitters

If you’re a fan of the UK’s grassroots metal scene, you’ll want to clear your calendar for mid-August. The Sanctum: Modern Metal Festival has just pulled the curtain back on its final line-up for 2026, and it’s looking like a proper belter. Taking place from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th August at Dead Wax Digbeth in Birmingham, the festival is bringing twenty-one bands to its 300-capacity outdoor stage.

Kicking things off as Friday’s headliners are Shields. After a six-year break, the band are back with a vengeance, armed with their latest record Death & Connection. Expect a visceral set featuring tracks like “Lacerate” and “Kill”. Saturday sees the genre-blending titans Hacktivist take the top spot. Known for their unique mix of grime vocals and dark djent grooves, they’ll be playing an exclusive 2026 live show in Birmingham. Closing out the weekend on Sunday are the post-hardcore quintet Lastelle, fresh from a massive stint at Download Festival 2025. We actually featured them a while back – check out our Band of the Day interview with Lastelle here.

The festival has come a long way from its 100-capacity pilot back in 2024, even consulting with the legends at UK Tech-Fest to help grow the event while keeping that intimate, community feel. This year, they’ve added The Mechanist as the final opening act following a killer performance at the official warm-up show. The rest of the alphabetised bill features Andromedous, Alchemize, Archives, ChuggaBoom, Cober Mouth, Defences, Divinitas, Doomed Cynicism, Downpour, Meet Your Maker, Rupcha Farms, Scatter The Tribe, Sixth Wonder, Swarm6ix, Take Breath, Tooth & Dagger, Vanitas, and Writhe.

Organisers Joe Hammond and Emma Collins are also making sure the festival is more accessible this year, with a stairs-free ground-floor setup and sensory options like hearing protection. Between sets, you can grab stonebaked pizzas from Dead Wax Pizza or a smashed burger from Destination Burger, with plenty of vegan choices to keep everyone happy. It’s a proper celebration of the next generation of metal in the city where it all started.
