UK underground heavyweights Conjurer have been confirmed as the special guests for Gaerea’s upcoming UK run this September. It’s a pairing that makes a lot of sense; both bands are currently pushing the boundaries of what extreme music can be, moving far beyond the standard tropes of black and death metal.
The tour comes as Gaerea continue to support their latest album, Loss (review here), which marks their debut for Century Media. The Portuguese masked collective have been one of the most talked-about bands in the scene lately, evolving from their post-black metal roots into something that embraces haunting melodies and – in a move that surprised a few purists – actual singing. It’s a bold step that has paid off, making their live show one of the most engaging spectacles in the genre. Check our review of their recent support slot in Glasgow when they were touring with Orbit Culture.
Conjurer, meanwhile, arrive on the back of their own monumental journey. Since their 2018 debut Mire, the band has grown into one of Britain’s most respected metal exports. Their latest album, Unself (review here), is their most personal work to date, documenting vocalist and guitarist Dani Nightingale’s voyage of self-discovery following an autism diagnosis at 31 and the realisation of being non-binary. Musically, it’s as crushing as ever, but with a newfound sense of space that only makes the heavy bits hit harder.
