If you’ve been living under a rock, you might have missed the massive news that Rush legends Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are finally hitting the road again. The “Fifty Something” tour is all about celebrating five decades of incredible music and, importantly, paying a proper tribute to their late brother-in-arms, Neil Peart. Demand has been absolutely mental, with the first wave of dates selling out fast, so the lads have naturally added more shows to keep the fans happy.
For those of us in the UK, the big news is that second shows have been tacked onto the stops in Manchester and Glasgow. It’s been a long time coming—the band haven’t graced a European stage since 2013. Joining Geddy and Alex to help bring those complex rhythms to life is the brilliant German drummer Anika Nilles, along with keyboardist Loren Gold. They aren’t just playing a quick set and heading to the bar, either; these are “evening with” shows featuring two full sets and a revolving setlist pulled from a massive catalogue of over 40 songs.
Geddy Lee sounds like he’s well up for it, mentioning that he and Alex are loving the rehearsal time and can’t wait to see some familiar faces. It’s a bittersweet milestone without Neil behind the kit, but with the blessing of his family, this feels like the right way to celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest bands to ever do it. We’ve been keeping an eye on the guys’ solo projects over the years, including the debut from Alex Lifeson’s Envy of None – you can check out our thoughts on that record here.
