Long-standing Japanese metal pioneers Sigh are back with the announcement of their brand-new studio album, Goh-ka, set for release via Peaceville Records on 4th September. Following their highly experimental 2022 release Shiki and their recent 35th-anniversary re-imagining, I Saw the World’s End: Hangman’s Hymn MMXXV, this upcoming eleven-track record promises a meticulously arranged masterclass in extreme, atmospheric grandeur.
Mainman Mirai Kawashima notes that the material is deeply personal, both musically and lyrically. Described as a boiling cauldron of Celtic Frost, Voivod, and Black Sabbath seasoned with elements of horror soundtracks, traditional Japanese instrumentation, psychedelic rock, and classical music, the record spans close to an hour of creative non-conformity. The triple-meaning title translates as 業火 (infernal fire scorching sinners), 劫火 (the fire that destroys the world at the end of time), and 業果 (karma).
Thematic inspiration stems from Kuso-zu, a traditional style of Buddhist art that illustrates the nine stages of bodily decomposition after death to promote detachment from transient physical beauty. The core lineup of Kawashima, Dr Mikannibal, and guitarist Nozomu Wakai is bolstered by Frédéric Leclercq (Kreator) on bass and American drummer Mike Heller. The album also features a notable guest appearance from Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, who provides a guitar solo on the track “Unputenpu”.
To celebrate the launch, the trio are embarking on select live dates, including an exclusive old-school performance on home turf.
