The Freddy Jones Band reaches for the stars with NASA’s Artemis II mission

It’s not every day you can say your music has literally left the planet, but The Freddy Jones Band have just ticked that off the bucket list. In a move that’s about as cool as it gets, NASA picked the band’s classic track “In a Daydream” as the official wake-up call for the Artemis II crew on their third day in flight. While most of us are struggling to hit the snooze button on a rainy Tuesday, these astronauts were heading towards the Moon with a bit of 90s alt-rock ringing in their ears.

According to the latest from NASA, the crew blasted the track as they got geared up for some serious business, including trajectory corrections and getting their lunar approach sorted. NASA has a long-standing tradition of playing tunes to get the astronauts moving, and now the Freddy Jones lads have joined that very exclusive club.

Frontman Marty Lloyd was understandably buzzed about the news. He reckoned it’s the kind of thing you dream about as a musician but never actually expect to happen. He mentioned that “In a Daydream” has always been about escape and possibility, but he didn’t think it would escape the atmosphere. Bassist Rich Ross added that the song has been a staple for the band for over 30 years and is a huge reason fans keep coming back to the gigs, but hearing it played in space is on a whole other level.

It’s a cracking achievement for a band that’s spent decades on the road building a loyal following. It’s one thing to have a hit on the radio, but being the soundtrack for human history? That’s proper legendary status right there.
