Leith native Delbhoy Kennedy is a man who clearly isn’t interested in half-measures. He’s just dropped his debut single, “Sky’s The Limit”, through Flip Flop Records, and it’s a proper statement of intent. Kennedy has even coined his own genre for the sound: “Future Nostalgia” – a mix of having the past in his bones and the future in his boots. It’s a bold claim, but the music backs it up with the kind of choruses designed to get a crowd on side.
He’s certainly been putting in the miles lately, having just come off the back of nationwide sell-out support tours with the likes of Tom Meighan, Peter Doherty, and Dodgy. He also managed to survive a run of wild nights in Dublin supporting Irish renegades Kneecap, which has helped him build a proper dedicated fanbase and pick up some high-profile fans like Chris Hawkins over at BBC 6 Music.
For the single, Kennedy and his management at Broken Wing Club didn’t mess about, bringing in seasoned producer Nick Brine. Brine is a man whose fingerprints are all over some absolute classics from Oasis, The Stone Roses, and Teenage Fanclub, so he knows a thing or two about making a record sound massive. Recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios, “Sky’s The Limit” also features some shimmering guitar work from Aziz Ibrahim that really helps the track soar.
It feels like things are really starting to move for the Leith songwriter. Between the high-profile support slots and the heavyweight production team behind him, he isn’t just climbing the ladder – he’s looking to break right through it.
