Finnish duo Musta Suru deliver atmospheric dread with “Veren varjot”

Finland has long been the gold standard for music that sounds like a cold, lonely trek through a forest, and Musta Suru are keeping that tradition very much alive. The Tampere-based duo have just released a track visualizer for “Veren varjot”, a haunting cut taken from their latest album, Viimeinen viilto.

Formed in 2020 after a jam session that went a bit deeper into the shadows than expected, the band – consisting of Non on guitars, bass, and vocals, and Mors on drums – specialize in what they call “Depressive Black Metal.” The name itself translates roughly to “black sorrow,” which gives you a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into before you even hit play. It’s not just noise for the sake of it, though; the pair describe their music as a form of therapy, dealing with the heavier aspects of human existence like pain and loss.

Released via Downfall Records, the track is a proper slow-burner that prioritizes atmosphere and raw emotion over breakneck speed. It’s the kind of music that feels deeply personal, as if you’ve stumbled into a rehearsal room where the walls are sweating with shared musical history. Both members have roots in the Finnish black metal scene, and that experience shows in the way they balance harsh, venomous vocals with melodies that linger long after the track ends.

If you’ve got a penchant for the bleak and the beautiful, “Veren varjot” is well worth a look. We’ve covered plenty of Finnish exports over the years – from the melodeath of Mors Subita to the more avant-garde end of the spectrum – and Musta Suru definitely hold their own in that dark corner of the world. You can check out the visualizer on YouTube now, but maybe keep the lights on for this one.
