If you like your death metal served with a side of raw aggression and zero apologies, then you’ll want to wrap your ears around Evilean. The band have just dropped their debut EP, Exhumation Evilean, and it’s a proper dive into the darker side of the human psyche. Released just yesterday, this five-track slab of brutality feels like a throwback to the days when the genre was dangerous, underground, and didn’t care about being radio-friendly.
Based out of Sydney but firmly rooted in that 90s old-school sound, Evilean consists of vocalist/guitarist Jojo Shaw, bassist Jim Ramses, and drummer Robin Stone. Together, they’ve crafted a record that’s less of a polished studio product and more of a cathartic explosion. Jojo mentions that what you hear is exactly how she feels while performing – unfiltered and aggressive. The songs aren’t just stories; they’re forged from personal unrest and memory, blurred with a bit of distortion to keep things unsettling.
The EP features some cracking tracks like “Damzel of Death”, which takes a grim look at justice and trauma, and the lead single “Lost Cause”. They’ve even left a couple of tracks shrouded in mystery with no official context, leaving it up to us punters to figure out what’s going on in the shadows. It’s an approach that fits the music perfectly – filthy, direct, and hostile.
