Eternal Dark return with sophomore album ‘Cugetări’

After a fair bit of activity following their re-emergence in 2021, Romanian dark metal outfit Eternal Dark have officially released their second studio album, Cugetări. Featuring nine new tracks, framed by a dedicated intro and outro, the record sees the band continuing to explore a broad and melancholic stylistic palette, keeping their lyrical focus firmly in their native Romanian.

The band’s journey has been an interesting one, to say the least. After a massive 27-year hiatus, they returned at the tail end of 2021 with the track “Vino moarte”. That momentum carried them into the recording of their 2023 debut full-length, Gânduri. While they’ve experimented with English-language singles like 2023’s “Thorns” and 2024’s “The Landscape of the Fall,” Cugetări returns to the deep introspection and dark themes that defined their earlier work.

Compared to their debut, the new material is being described as a significant step forward. Mixed and mastered by the band’s own drummer, Sorin Ghiniță, at E.D. Production, the album maintains the signature gloom—touching on everything from melancholy to suicidal depression—but pairs it with a more refined compositional approach and a noticeable increase in aggression, with some subtle progressive death metal influences creeping into the mix.

The record is out now through Loud Rage Music and can be grabbed on Bandcamp. While there’s no word yet on any UK dates, the band remains active in the Romanian extreme metal scene, which has been producing some cracking releases lately, such as the recent abrasive debut from Skadin.
