Neurosis return with surprise new album ‘An Undying Love for a Burning World’

In a move that’s caught the entire heavy music world off guard, the legendary Neurosis have broken a decade of silence. Today, the band surprise-dropped their fourteenth studio album, An Undying Love for a Burning World, marking a massive turning point in their long and storied history.

This isn’t just a simple “we’re back” moment, though. The band have confirmed a major line-up change, with Aaron Turner (of Isis and Sumac fame) joining the ranks on guitar and vocals. Turner has always been a bit of a kindred spirit to the Neurosis camp, so seeing him step in alongside Steve Von Till, Jason Roeder, Dave Edwardson, and Noah Landis feels like a natural, if incredibly exciting, fit. The band have been quick to point out that this isn’t a “reunion” in the traditional sense – as they put it, they never actually broke up, but rather waited for the right moment to let the music breathe again.

The new record was knocked out over three weekends this past winter at Studio Litho in Seattle with producer Scott Evans. If you’re expecting a light listen, you’ve come to the wrong place. The band describes the writing process as a necessary “purge and purify” session to deal with the state of the world today. It’s heavy, hypnotic, and sounds exactly like the kind of catharsis we’ve come to expect from them.

In addition to the new tunes, Neurosis are finally returning to the stage. They’ll be playing their first show in seven years this July at the Fire in the Mountains festival in Montana. It’s a special invitation from the Firekeeper Alliance, a charity focused on youth suicide prevention in indigenous communities – a cause Steve Von Till is closely involved with. It’s currently the only date on the books, so it’s bound to be a monumental night for those lucky enough to be there.
