Los Angeles thrash and death metal duo Whipworm have returned with their fifth full-length album, Death Beyond. The record is a conceptual journey that pushes the band’s blend of aggression and storytelling into even darker territory.
Death Beyond follows a man who receives a mysterious letter describing future events that should be impossible to know. As the story unfolds, he soon realises that the contents are not only real, but are guiding him toward an unimaginable destiny – a path that may lead him to challenge and ultimately usurp the throne of Death itself. It’s a properly heavy concept for a band that has never been one to shy away from grander themes.
Musically, the album shows off the duo’s ability to merge thrash and death metal with technical precision. You’ve got the usual crushing riffs and blistering drum assaults, but there are also dark, atmospheric passages that give the whole thing a cinematic feel. The band was formed in LA back in 2020 when Travis Weinand (vocals, guitars, bass) and Dave Ferarra (drums) began writing together during the pandemic. What started as a way to keep busy during lockdown has quickly evolved into a fully-fledged project with a very clear vision.
Whipworm describe their sound as a “love letter to all things heavy,” and it’s hard to argue with that. Since their formation, they’ve been determined to shred harder and blast faster with every release, and Death Beyond feels like a decisive step forward in that mission. If you’re a fan of speed, power, and uncompromising intensity, this one is well worth a spin.
