Enslaved team up with Storm Weather Shanty Choir for sea shanty single

Norway’s progressive masters Enslaved have never been ones to stick to a predictable path, and their latest move is a proper deep dive into their coastal roots. The band have just released a unique two-track digital single in collaboration with the Storm Weather Shanty Choir, a group that hails from Bergen’s famous tall ship, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl.

The single features two tracks: “Fire Marengo”, a traditional sea shanty, and “Anna Lovinda”, a piece penned by the late Norwegian cultural legend Erik Bye. This isn’t just a random experiment, though; the seeds for this were sown back in 2014 when the band performed on the deck of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. They’ve long felt that the rhythmic, collective effort of shanties shares a common soul with the “modern amplified ritual” of metal.

Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson have always been vocal about their heritage, and they reckon sailors were essentially the first metalheads – facing the elements and answering back with song. We’ve chatted with Ivar before about the band’s evolution, and this project feels like a natural extension of their constant desire to look both forward and back at the same time.

The collaboration really took shape during the choir’s 20th anniversary gig in Bergen last year. The vibe was so right that they decided to get into the studio in early 2026 to make it official. It’s less about a “fusion” of genres and more about recognizing that the same pulse that moved sails hundreds of years ago is the one moving amplifiers today. You can check out the visualiser for “Fire Marengo” on YouTube now to see exactly what they mean.

The tracks are available on all the usual digital platforms today. If you want to catch the band live, they’ve got a handful of Norwegian dates coming up this spring before heading over to the States for the Fire In The Mountains festival in July.
