Dire End release first single in Basque, “XI”

Hailing from the industrial heart of Bilbao, technical death metal outfit Dire End have just dropped their latest single, “XI”. This track marks a significant milestone for the band as it’s their first composition written and performed entirely in Basque. Following up on their debut “Burned To Death”, the guys are leaning into their heritage while maintaining the precision and aggression they’re known for.

The new track is a moodier affair than its predecessor, blending atmospheric, brooding sections with the kind of meticulous, high-speed execution that fans of the genre live for. Lyrically, “XI” isn’t your standard death metal fare; it draws deep from ancient Basque folklore, specifically the legend of the lamia – a mythical, siren-like creature that lurks beneath the surface. It’s a dark, captivating concept that fits perfectly with the band’s complex sound.

If you’re a fan of the technical wizardry found in bands like Archspire, Obscura, or Necrophagist, you’ll find plenty to sink your teeth into here. The band have managed to carve out a unique niche by pairing contemporary technical death metal with the linguistic and cultural identity of their home region. It’s a bold move that pays off, giving the track a distinct character that sets it apart from the usual pack.

The single is out now on all major digital platforms and comes with an official music video that you can check out over on YouTube. While they are currently carving a path in Spain, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this bunch to see if they make their way over to our shores for some UK dates in the future. In the meantime, crank it loud and get acquainted with one of Bilbao’s finest new exports.
