Celestial Death watch the ruins fall in cinematic new single “Death of an Empire”

Atlanta’s blackened death metal outfit Celestial Death have officially unleashed their latest single, “Death of an Empire”. Following on from the Lovecraftian chaos of “Aeons”, this new track marks a massive step forward for the band, blending relentless blast beats and tremolo-picked triplet arpeggios with a haunting, melodic atmosphere. It’s a fierce bit of business that effectively solidifies their place in the modern extreme metal underground.

Lyrically, the track is a bit of a grim warning, exploring the total collapse of powerful systems through the eyes of a lone survivor. It’s all about urban decay, environmental destruction, and the inevitable fallout of unchecked power. Vocalist and guitarist Forrest Jessup (also known as Jay Crash) describes the song as a post-apocalyptic reflection, urging listeners to consider the long-term consequences of our current societal and ecological strain. If you like your metal with a side of cinematic cosmic horror, this is right up your street.

The band originally started out in 2023 under the name Imperii, but underwent a total rebirth when Matthew Carmichael took over the drum kit. This turning point saw a shift towards a much darker, atmospheric vision, leading to the rebranding as Celestial Death. The line-up has continued to evolve, with Jason Schwartzwalder (ex-Brutality, Mother’s Tomb) joining on lead guitar and the recent addition of bassist Robbie Marsh earlier this year.

Drawing on influences like Wolves in the Throne Room and Cattle Decapitation, the trio have crafted a sound that is as suffocatingly heavy as it is vast. Each track serves as a descent into existential collapse, but also a form of personal catharsis for Jessup, who has been vocal about his journey through addiction to sobriety. With “Death of an Empire” now doing the rounds via Terminus Hate City Records, Celestial Death are quickly proving to be one of the most visionary acts rising from the Georgia metal scene.
