Youth Killed It take a swing at the machines with new single “AI Killer”

Norwich’s finest indie-punk exports Youth Killed It are back, and they’ve got a bone to pick with our future robot overlords. Their latest single, “AI Killer”, has just dropped via Kycker, and it’s a properly relatable bit of songwriting for anyone worried about being replaced by a line of code.

While the band usually brings the high-octane “beat punk” energy that’s seen them share stages with the likes of Soft Play and Kid Kapichi, they’ve stripped things back for this one. “AI Killer” is an acoustic-led track that leans into the cultural panic surrounding artificial intelligence. It’s got that classic YKI dry wit, but there’s a genuine undercurrent of anxiety about what technology is doing to creative identity. Frontman Jack Murphy tackles the fear of obsolescence head-on, delivering lines about the fragility of being an artist in a world of algorithms with his signature “social hand grenade” delivery.

Despite the dystopian subject matter, the track isn’t all doom and gloom. It’s got a scrappy, human feel to it that purposefully contrasts with the cold efficiency of AI. There’s even a cheeky, self-deprecating nod to the future, with the band hoping the machines “remember I was always nice to computers” when the uprising finally happens. It’s a bit of modern folk-punk that feels incredibly “now,” proving that human emotion still has the edge over anything a server can spit out.
