They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but eight years is a long time to keep fans waiting. Thankfully, Marmozets have finally confirmed the details of their long-awaited return. The band’s third studio album, titled CO.WAR.DICE., is set to land on 22nd May via their own label.
It’s the first full-length release from the Bingley outfit since 2018, and if the reaction to recent teasers “Kiss From A Mother” and “You Want The Truth” is anything to go by, they haven’t lost a step. To mark the album announcement, the band have dropped another new single, “New York”.
The new track was born out of an impromptu Friday night jam between vocalist Becca Bottomley and guitarist Jack Bottomley, marking the first song they wrote for this new era. “New York is an eccentric city, full of eccentric people and that inspires us,” says Becca. “We reminisced of our first trip over a bottle of red as we recorded ideas. We met a police officer smoking a cigar outside JFK airport, got in a cab while ‘Africa’ by Toto blasted out of the radio as we approached Manhattan. We wanted to write something that kind of encapsulated that 70s punk energy while painting a picture of this wild experience we had of playing a show downtown to secure our first record deal.”
There has been a bit of a shuffle in the ranks for this record. Following the amicable departure of original member Will Bottomley, Sam Macintyre has switched from guitar to bass duties, while brother Josh Macintyre remains behind the kit. Produced by Johnathan Gilmore (Biffy Clyro, Nothing But Thieves), the new album promises to channel everything from The Cramps to Devo, mixing Becca’s signature blood-letting vocals with new melodic experimentation.
If you were hoping to catch them on their current run of intimate “underplay” shows, you’re out of luck. The dates, culminating in a show at London’s Dingwalls on 31st January, sold out in minutes. However, they will be returning to the big stages this summer, supporting Biffy Clyro at their massive Finsbury Park show.
