We are barely two days into 2026, the Hogmanay hangover might still be lingering for some, but the music scene never sleeps. Wasting absolutely no time in setting the tone for the new year, independent alternative rock artist I Forget Myself has just unleashed his ninth studio release, An Exception.
Hitting release number nine is no small achievement for a solo artist. While many bands struggle to get a second album out of the door before arguing over who drank the last beer and splitting up, this project has maintained a serious level of output. Based over in Hong Kong but originally hailing from South Africa, the man behind the moniker is a bit of a globetrotter. That mix of cultural backdrops and decades of experience usually makes for some interesting songwriting, offering a perspective you don’t typically get from your local garage band.
The new EP is touted as exploring a “fresh stylistic direction”. While PR emails often claim a band has reinvented the wheel, in this case, it looks like a shift towards a more polished, revitalised rock sound. Although I Forget Myself is a solo endeavour, he hasn’t done it all alone. Kyle Reece Williams has been drafted in to handle the drums, which is always a winner in our book – you just can’t replicate the feel of a real drummer hitting things very hard.
On the production front, Clint Watts at Watts Productions has handled the mixing and mastering to ensure it meets international standards. We’re promised experimental soundscapes and plenty of lyrical depth to get stuck into. If you’re looking for something moody and atmospheric to start your 2026 playlist, this is well worth a spin.
