If you were looking for a gentle way to ease yourself into 2026, you might want to look elsewhere. Hamburg and Berlin-based thrash metal duo Satanic Squirrel have decided to kick the new year off with a proper racket, releasing their brand new EP Crush Everyone on January 1st.
Formed in late 2022 by scene veterans Saschimoto and T-Fresh (who you might know from Hellatio), the band are unashamedly rooted in the classic Bay Area sound. If your record collection is stuffed with early Metallica, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, and Testament, this is likely going to be right up your street. They promise fast, aggressive, old-school riffs but with a modern, heavy production that saves it from sounding like a dusty demo tape.
While the music pays homage to the masters of the late 80s and early 90s, the lyrical themes take a dive into conspiracies and global manipulation. However, looking at the tracklist, it’s clear the lads don’t take themselves too seriously. With song titles like “Consquirrelcy” and “Fire Breathing Squirrel Demon”, there’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek vibe going on here which is always welcome in a genre that can sometimes get a bit po-faced.
