If you’ve been hankering for a bit of that classic 90s Scandinavian death metal sound but fancy something fresh, you might want to cast your eyes (and ears) towards Germany. Wittlich-based four-piece From Ashes Reborn have just unleashed their latest single, “In Truth Divided”, and it’s a bit of a belter.
Released yesterday (January 2nd), the track serves as a tasty appetiser for their upcoming sophomore album, Chasing Utopia. It’s been a fair old wait for fans of the band, considering their debut full-length Existence Exiled dropped back in 2018. That first record was praised for its organic sound and somber atmosphere, largely thanks to the production work of Markus Stock at Klangschmiede Studio E. It looks like the lads – Sebastian, Thomas, Ronny, and Dirk – have spent the intervening years sharpening their tools, aiming to blend that raw aggression with the kind of sweeping hooklines that get stuck in your head for days.
The new single isn’t just about heavy riffs and blast beats, though. The band have taken a dive into some fairly weighty lyrical themes this time around. Speaking about the inspiration behind “In Truth Divided”, the band explains:
“‘In Truth Divided’ tells of the disintegration of shared reality – when convictions become walls and truth becomes a weapon. The song shows how easily people take refuge in certainty and lose understanding in the process. Musically aggressive and melancholic at the same time, it builds bridges between anger and insight.”
It’s a song about self-deception and the division we see all too often these days, wrapped up in a melodic death metal package that balances fury with melody. If you like your metal with a bit of emotional weight behind the growls, this one’s for you. “In Truth Divided” is out now as an independent release on all the usual streaming platforms.
