Kansas City atmospheric prog-rockers A Light Within have resurfaced from a quiet spell to drop a massive new single, “Dying Clock”. Released just before the turn of the year, it marks their first fresh material since 2024’s “Identity” and signals a new chapter for the band following a bit of a hiatus.
The new track is a bit of a beast, clocking in at over nine minutes. It’s a slow-burn auditory journey that fits right in if you’re a fan of the likes of Tool, Porcupine Tree, or Katatonia. To help bring this monster to life, the band enlisted Failure drummer Kelli Scott, who lends his signature sound to the recording. It’s a nice touch that adds some serious weight to the rhythm section, backed up by Madelyn Robertson on bass for this particular track.
The band – comprising Kyle Brandt (vocals/keys), Jeff Irvine (guitar), Josh Bennett (bass), and Nick Sloan (drums) – spent 2025 rebuilding and crafting this new sound. During their downtime, they also took a trip down memory lane, revamping their 2013 debut EP Preface into a polished re-release titled re:preface back in August.
“Dying Clock” seems to be just the start of this renewed activity. It’s dark, cinematic, and introspective—everything you’d want from a band known for their immersive soundscapes. With the creative juices flowing again, we’re told to expect more music to follow.
