If you’re in the mood for something properly grim to soundtrack the darker months, Theogonia Records has just dropped some news that might be right up your street. Greek black metal outfit Temple of Katharsis are gearing up to unleash their second full-length album, Worshipers of the Ancient Necromancy.
For those who missed their 2023 debut, Macabre Ritual, these guys have been busy bubbling up from the Greek underground. They aren’t just sticking to one lane, either; they’re aiming to blend that classic, atmospheric Hellenic black metal sound with the more aggressive, razor-sharp ferocity you usually associate with the Scandinavian scene. It’s a mix that promises to be raw, ritualistic, and heavy enough to rattle your fillings.
The new record seems to be doubling down on the spooky stuff, with the band diving deep into themes of ancient sorcery and necromantic lore. It’s not just about making a racket; they describe the album as a “sacrament to the old gods”. So, expect plenty of atmosphere alongside the blast beats. To give punters a taste of what’s to come, they’ve highlighted the single “The Darkness Which Swallows The Dawn”, along with a video, which acts as a solid introduction to their particular brand of spiritual warfare.
On the technical side of things, the band didn’t cut corners. Vocals were laid down at H12 Audio, while the guitars and bass were captured at O.A.R. Music Sound. Drums got the treatment at Redhouse Studios before everything was taken back to H12 Audio for mixing and mastering to ensure maximum intensity. The lineup features some proper black metal handles, too: Zeratul handled the song synthesis, Hellmaster666 penned most of the lyrics (apart from “Tainaro”), and Souleater provided the riff ideas and recorded the guitars. The whole package is wrapped up in artwork by Wolf’s Path, fitting the unholy aesthetic perfectly.
Worshipers of the Ancient Necromancy is shaping up to be a solid release for fans of the genre. If you like your metal steeped in occult fire and played with serious conviction, keep an eye out for this one. Or grab a copy on CD now!
