If you are currently sat on the sofa surrounded by wrapping paper, nursing a Boxing Day hangover and regretting that third helping of Christmas pudding, we have just the cure. Midjungards have dropped their brand new single, “Hlöðskviða”, and it is the perfect antidote to the festive cheer.
This is the second track to be lifted from their upcoming album, Long Haired Kings, and it sees the band diving deep into ancient history. “Hlöðskviða” (don’t ask us to pronounce it after a few sherries) tells the story of the Battle of the Goths and Huns. We are talking about proper Norse saga territory here: cursed legacies, fraternal strife, and epic warfare. The track follows the quest for the cursed sword Tyrfing, mixing flashbacks of brutal clashes with a soundscape that blends the grandeur of epic metal with the dark, gritty mysticism of black metal.
The upcoming album, Long Haired Kings, was completely produced by the band themselves earlier this year and promises a more modern, yet massive sound. The concept behind the record is a tribute to the Gothic kings of old who changed the course of history. Apparently, back in the day, having a massive mane of hair wasn’t just a fashion choice or a sign you listened to too much Iron Maiden; it was a symbol of bravery and an actual requirement to be a king. It’s a concept that fits the heavy metal aesthetic perfectly—you don’t see many short back and sides in this genre for a reason.
There is no confirmed release date on the album just yet, but check out the tracklist below to see what they have in store.
