The Mist return with first album in 30 years – ‘The Dark Side of the Soul (An Anatomy of the Soul)’

Brazilian thrash metal veterans The Mist are back with their first full-length studio release since 1995. Their new album, The Dark Side of the Soul (An Anatomy of the Soul), will be unleashed on November 7th, 2025 via Alma Mater Records, the label founded by Moonspell frontman Fernando Ribeiro. The album’s lead single, “(Brain) – Geppetto’s Song”, is streaming now with an official video directed by Leandro Miranda. The clip sees The Mist joined by circus artists from Casa Circo Gamarra, with Diego Gamarra starring as Pinocchio. His unsettling transformation into a human reflects the song’s theme — a dark inversion of the creator/creation myth. “Geppetto’s Song is a twisted take on the eternal clash between creator and creation,” explains vocalist Vladimir Korg. “Pinocchio refuses to ‘become human’ and play along with society’s lies. Instead, he chooses the outsider’s path, rejecting Disney’s polished morals for the raw chaos of real life.”

Exactly three decades after their last full-length Gottverlassen, The Mist return with a concept album split into three acts. Musically, it’s pure thrash at full throttle: razor-sharp riffs, crushing rhythms and furious vocals paired with allegorical lyrics steeped in rage and defiance. Produced by André Damien, mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Halford, Meshuggah, Moonspell), and featuring cover art from Michael Whelan, the record is being hailed as the band’s most ambitious to date.

Formed in 1989 from the ashes of Mayhem and fronted by former Chakal vocalist Vladimir Korg, The Mist quickly established themselves in Brazil’s metal underground. Their debut Phantasmagoria (1989) set out a furious thrash blueprint, followed by the dark and conceptual The Hangman Tree (1991). Later records saw them experiment with industrial elements on Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust (1993) before closing their first era with Gottverlassen (1995).

The band reunited in 2018 with The Scarecrow Tour featuring Jairo Guedz of The Troops of Doom, later releasing their comeback EP The Circle of the Crow in 2021. Now, with The Dark Side of the Soul (An Anatomy of the Soul), The Mist are once again ready to take their place among thrash metal’s titans.
