Melodic death pioneers Mors Principium Est release ninth album, ‘Darkness Invisible’

Melodic death metal pioneers Mors Principium Est (MPE) have returned with their ninth studio album, Darkness Invisible, which is out today via PERCEPTION – A Division of Reigning Phoenix Music. Described as a powerful and emotionally charged statement, the record maintains the band’s legacy of intensity, melody, and continual evolution.

Musically, Darkness Invisible delves deep into the group’s core identity. The album is built on razor-sharp riffs that collide with sweeping orchestrations, melancholic harmonies, and relentless rhythmic precision. However, MPE push beyond familiar genre conventions, introducing cinematic arrangements, subtle electronic textures, ambient passages, and dynamic shifts that mirror the emotional weight of the lyrics. The album confronts existential dread, inner turmoil, and impermanence, with lyrical themes that revolve around psychological isolation, unseen suffering, and the slow disintegration of self.

This work marks a return to self-sufficiency for MPE, as the album’s production was handled entirely in-house before being mixed by Jens Bogren and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. This hands-on approach delivers a raw authenticity that perfectly balances sharpness and polish. Vocalist Ville Viljanen delivers one of his most commanding performances yet, alternating between ferocious growls, anguished screams, and rare moments of eerie calm to anchor the chaos with a deeply human core.

The album’s bleak and surreal artwork, created by Álvaro Valverde Fernández, complements the music’s emotional landscapes, portraying twisted forms and fractured realities that echo the lyrical themes.

Despite decades of industry shifts and line-up changes, MPE have evolved rather than faded. Darkness Invisible stands as a culmination of their journey: a declaration of artistic independence, a defiant cry into the void, and a reminder that even in the deepest shadows, there is beauty to be found. The record is available on all major digital platforms, CD, and vinyl.
