Road to Hella Rock 2025: Mystiek

We’ve been lucky enough to be asked back to sponsor Hella Rock Festival in Coventry for its second year! Once again, we’re getting to know the bands on the bill in the run up to the big day. This time around we’ve got West Midland-ers Mystiek who’ll be a set of locals (sort of) on the bill!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re based in Wolverhampton, though each of us come from different areas in the West Midlands such as Stafford, Lichfield and Stourbridge.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Mystiek has been going since 2016, but has had a few line up changes along the way. Jimmy, our bassist, joined us in late 2023 and we’ve been finding success ever since, playing across the country and writing new material.

Where does the name of the band come from?

“Mystiek”, translated from Dutch to English, means “mysticism” which at the time felt like an appropriate band name with regards to our indecisive nature of genre direction. The name stuck with us and although we have a more cemented lean in what music we play today, we can always break down the foundation and build something new.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We describe ourselves as a high-impact hard rock band, but we have such wide influences from all areas of music, not just rock and metal, that makes us unique. At our core, we’ve got a 90s alt/grunge attitude, but elements of 80s shred and modern rock/nu-metal riffage in there. It’s definitely interesting when we get together to write as there’s characteristics of different genres that just weren’t really seen together like shred in grunge and so forth.

In essence, it’s big, in your face, packed full of energy but full of memorable melodies and relevant lyrics and meaning that you can relate to.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you rather than hanging at the bar or grabbing some merch?

High energy, lots of movement. Whenever we speak to people after our shows they are surprised by the show and checking us out after. We’ve been the underdogs for a while and we love giving it our all on stage. We pack our set full of our biggest songs so there’s little let up.

Were you at Hella Rock last year? What have you heard about it?

We weren’t but it’s been on our radar! We got talking to James of Tattoo Molly (running Hella Rock Festival) last year when we were playing together at Voodoo Blue Lounge with The Soul Revival, and had discussed playing Hella Rock Festival in 2025 but didn’t think too much of it after, but here we are!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’re doubling down on the energy, big riffs, big songs. We’ve been hard at work for a good year or more now writing new songs and trying them out at different shows. But best believe we’ll be bringing a lean and back-to-back set to kick the festival off with a bang. Those familiar with us may recognise some of our existing material like “Bring Me Down” and “Shut Up”, but these will be joined with new ones too, made for the big stage and getting the festival going.

Which other band on the bill are you most looking forward to catching?

We’re excited to catch The Virginmarys, especially after hearing them a lot on Planet Rock. It’ll be great to see Electric Black before we play together at The Giffard Arms in Wolverhampton this coming October, too.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’ve been in the studio this year recording our latest single at Monochrome Studios which is sounding massive, full of groove and we can’t wait to release this! We’ve not long finished the music video for it and are just finalising the artwork, it should be coming out very soon (before the festival).

Other than that we’ve been working hard on new songs, recording scratch tracks to take into the studio and more!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Our singer, Josh, pulling his groin on stage was definitely interesting! We were kicking off our final song, “Shut Up”, at the end of a headline set at Redrum in Stafford and Josh goes to stick his foot on the monitor during his first scream and goes flying off the stage, pulling his groin! We won’t let him live it down to this day.

There’s also Mayor’s Fest 2021 where Josh did a backflip to finish the set and nearly went through the only drum kit on stage…

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

We’ll take anything you give us!
